Substance Use and Behavioural Disorders

Alumni

Approved: October 3, 2012
Revised: June, 2014

After completing the term of a Continuing Care Agreement, the physician is offered the opportunity to continue with any part of the monitoring process. Physicians who choose to continue are called Alumni. They may continue with full or modified biological monitoring, attend  monitoring meetings and/or meet with the Assistant Registrar.

Health monitoring programs have been shown to be of significant benefit for physicians with substance use disorders. Physicians who adhere to the program’s triad of treatment, support and professional requirements benefit both from a personal health and professional practice point of view.  Monitoring has been shown to significantly reduce relapse rates.

Participation as an Alumni is discretionary. The Assistant Registrar receives a report only in the event of relapse. More serious relapses may also be reported to the Complaints Director.
